“a moderate hike with amazing views”
Moderate. The longest trail in the park begins at the Door and Window parking area and travels five miles one way to the Fossil Exhibit Trail. Relatively level, the path passes along some badlands formations. 10 miles/16 km (round trip)
This is a moderate hike and if you go in summer bring plenty of water and dress for it, because it gets HOT! I highly recommend hiking around the Badlands, don't just drive through it.
Castle Trail connects up with Medicine and Root trail after about a half a mile. The entire loops is over six and a half miles. If you go in late spring, early summer, best to arrive early, even before the sun is out, because it really does get scorching in the late afternoon.
Bring a hat, suntan lotion, cover your shoulders, drink lots of water, good hiking shoes, and don't forget your camera.
My Family really enjoyed this place. We thought that you had to hike through but is was a GREAT 29-mile detour off of I-90 through the Park. There are plenty of great spots to stop, get out, take in the scenery and hike along the way.
We got there early in the day, but it got hot quickly. Bring water.
This was well worth the stop.
$15 for the car load to drive through. The pass is good for 7 days.
Very very beautiful place to enjoy and walk around!
