Ted Drewes has been selling frozen custard and Christmas trees for decades, with an attention to quality that has made his trees and custard the finest in St. Louis. It all started when Ted Sr. opened his first ice cream store in Florida in 1929, followed the next year by an other store on Natural Bridge in St. Louis and the South Grand store in 1931. In 1941 the family opened a second south side stand which is the current Chippewa location, old route 66. By 1958, the south side stands were all that remained. According to Ted Jr., the success of the operation has brought it nationwide attention in the form of offers to franchise the stands. He said such offers pour in quite frequently. However he has never agreed to franchise and he says that he never will. Featured on Season 4 of Man vs. Food!
We were in St Louis for the weekend, and went twice. Both times, I got a concrete with brownies and tart cherries - so good! My husband got the "all shook up" which had bananas and Reese's. :) We can't wait for our next STL trip. Oh, and we both got "regulars" which were a little too big.
This was my first time having frozen custard. It was different. I had a raspberry concrete. My wife got turtle. We couldn't finish our mediums. Turns out, that's a lot of frozen custard.
This is definitely a must stop. Ask the locals what their favorites are. I had a lemon cheesecake concrete with raspberries and it was the best thing I have eaten. You're not supposed to stop everywhere but this is one of those that you just simply must do.
It's as familiar and midwestern as these ice cream stands get. Better yet, it's a Route 66 staple. You order, they remember it by memory, and your dish is handed to you before you know it. A must-see and a St. Louis staple.
We had the mini concrete, mine with M&Ms. It was ok, but not outstanding. I'm glad we went because this is such a St Louis institution, but one visit is probably sufficient.
I had never had frozen custard before, and oh my good lord, I have been missing out. This was delicious. Super creamy, fast service, and very friendly.

I'm not sure what I'm missing. Based on many positive reviews, this institution is a popular one in Saint Louis, and I believe it based on the number of customers ordering custard at 11:30AM on a Wednesday.
After planning a Route 66 trip for years, which included reading many reviews, I anticipated an experience I would never get in California where I live.
Now I've had frozen custard on the East Coast before and really loved the overall experience from beginning to end. Well, I can say that today's experience started positively with the friendly server making recommendations then presenting our orders upside down very quickly before putting it right side up.
As we made our way to the benches to sit down, the cup tilted a bit and and some of the concrete came sloshing out onto my phone and hand. This surprised me since I was expecting the treat to be completely frozen, especially with a name like concrete and the fact that she held it upside down.
I wiped my phone and hand with a napkin, and when I proceeded to pick up my spoon to scoop it, I realized I didn't even need a utensil because the entire cup of custard melted into a warm soup of strawberries and oreo crumbles that I could sip.
I drank the mini concoction. I had planned on ordering another flavor but changed my mind.
We then strolled over to the gift shop, which was closed for another hour and a half.
I returned to the window to chat with one of the servers and to verify if my experience was typical. She confirmed the custard did melt quickly then apologized. I made a comment that she need not apologize since it is what it is.
Considering that the after taste added negatively to the experience, I cannot recommend the product, but I can recommend the stop for a check-off-the-Route-66 bucket list.
This is a must try if you are visiting St Louis. I came as a kid, and it’s still amazing - all my kids loved it too.
