“one of Lake Erie's best known landmarks”
“Marblehead Lighthouse is one of Lake Erie's best known and most-photographed landmarks! The grounds surrounding the lighthouse offer excellent picnicking and views of Lake Erie, Sandusky Bay, Kelleys Island and South Bass Island. A museum, located in the Keeper's House and operated by the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society, is open whenever the tower is open.”
We stopped by to photograph this scenic location and watched a lovely sunset. The people I ran into there (locals) were friendly and helpful. The only downside was the outhouse they had there. Worst I have ever experienced (but hey, when you gotta' go, you gotta' go!)...but literally, it was pitch black inside with all kinds of flying insects and the worst stench of raw human waste you can imagine...no chemicals to aid in odor control, no water to dilute things, and it had to be over 100 degrees in there. So nasty! I almost lost it when I opened the door to escape and a frog lept out in front of me.
Neat lighthouse. Well maintained, but it's only open a couple times a month. We missed it by one day. Oh well, next time!
This is a beautiful park worth a sunrise wake up call! If you go at the right time you can go up in the lighthouse! I wasn't able to but was pleasantly surprised with the natural beauty in this area!
Beautiful area! Apparently the lighthouse it's closed on Sundays but you can still walk on the shore and have a picnic. Must see if you're in the area!
Awesome! Go before 4pm and you can go up in the lighthouse.
When you visit Sandusky, you’ll want to stop by the Marblehead Lighthouse; it’s one of Ohio’s most photographed places for a reason! It is the oldest operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes, and continues to work today.
The lighthouse offers tours from Memorial Day to Labor Day, where visitors get to explore the history and function of Marblehead. While visiting the lighthouse, your family can also enjoy the quaint picnic areas and gorgeous views of Lake Erie’s islands. There’s also a gift shop and museum.
Great place. Relaxing. Worth a visit.
Worth the stop if you haven’t had a chance to feel the swell of large, deep water in a long time. Like the ocean without salt in the air. Nice when your drive is going to keep you landlocked and end in Colorado.
Very pretty, but they closed the lighthouse at 3:40 apparently? We tried to go up but the lady that was there told us that they closed at 3:40. Super pretty though. The water is awesome and the lighthouse is super cool.
It was absolutely gorgeous! Too bad it wasn't open I would have liked to climb to the top of it. Definitely a great stop.
