Frank Lloyd Wright is an interesting figure; on one hand, he's a flippin' genius. He was never a licensed architect and was completely self taught. On the other hand he was an egomaniac, although the tours here play it down. The tours are still very informative; you’ll learn that this gorgeous building was originally built as a camp, with no running water or electricity and only canvas covering the buildings. There are so many details here that the tours make sure to highlight, like the petroglyphs he found on the property and incorporated into his design for the space, so it’s worth it to pay attention when visiting.
“come see Frank Lloyd Wright's winter retreat!”
Taliesin West was architect Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. Today it is the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and houses the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Open to the public for tours, Taliesin West is located on Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. The complex drew its name from Wright's summer home, Taliesin, in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation maintains its international headquarters at Taliesin West, in Scottsdale, Arizona. As the organization founded by Wright to be the repository of his life's work and ideas and the first to bear his name, the Foundation is engaged in a broad range of activities to preserve Wright's legacy: provide opportunities for the public to learn about the principle ideas embodied in his work: increase public awareness of the importance of architecture to society and the individual: and stimulate a demand for excellence in architecture and design.
Absolutely amazing! The one hour tour is definitely worth it
Perfectly camouflaged on the hillside, Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home/camp and campus is fascinating. We were privileged to have a tour guide, Deidra, who was well versed in all things Frank Lloyd Wright . . . I believe only his children and perhaps his students only could've been more versed in all things FLW. This compound gives interesting insight into the man, the architect, the husband/lover, the mentor and "the greatest architect ever". Check the schedule for the specific tour in which you are interested and purchase your tickets online before making the trek out to Taliesin West.
I did the 90 minute tour and it was awesome! Scottsdale is such a cute town, and Taliesin West is gorgeous. The tour truly shows off the talents of Frank Lloyd Wright. Make SURE you wear breathable clothes and bring plenty of water because it is HOT, especially during the summer months.
