“oldest & most northern topiary garden in the United States”
It is a small country estate in Portsmouth was purchased in 1872 by Thomas E. Brayton (1844-1939), Treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company in Fall River, Massachusetts. It consisted of seven acres of land, a white clapboard summer residence, farm outbuildings, a pasture and a vegetable garden. Green Animals is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. In addition, Green Animals remains as a rare example of a self-sufficient estate combining formal topiaries, vegetable and herb gardens, orchards and a Victorian house overlooking Narragansett Bay.
Gorgeous property wth beautiful topiaries! Very different from the other "mansion" properties but still on the same pass.
$15pp for one location (breakers/mansions run by same people), $20 for breakers+topiary, or $32 for 5 different locations.
Older topiary are structural supported not as “wow” as newer. $18 to visit this and two other gardens in the area. Nice short walk. 45-60 if you linger
Cool place but 15.99$ to enter is pricy
