“the most remarkable geological curiosity of the country”
Explore a half-mile long ridge of 60-foot high rock forming caves, crevices, and passageways in an ancient forest! Located just 15 minutes from Chautauqua Lake, Panama Rocks is one of the top-rated attractions in Chautauqua County based on independent reviews on TripAdvisor. The “HISTORY OF CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY NEW YORK AND ITS PEOPLE” by John Downs and Fedwick Hedley was printed by the American Historical Society in 1921 and has a magnitude of information on Chautauqua County, including the local geology and Panama Rocks – “the most remarkable geological curiosity of the county!”
Beautiful location with massive rocks! Main perimeter trail is easy/moderate and well-marked. Lots of mini trails inside it that range in difficulty. Loved the "treasure hunt" provided by the front office -- learned some things and kept me engaged. It's hard to describe the beauty and magnitude of Panama Rocks. You just have to go see it yourself!
One note: I saw a user post that you should take caution if it's rained recently. I agree! I went on a day during a dry spell and there were still some slippery places from water and dead leaves.
Great place for family day trip.
Hiking trail on a private property. Owner is really nice and informative. This is a great little 1 mile trail. There are Unusual rock formations with informational signs accompanying the more notable ones. Wear sneakers or hiking shoes as the trail is muddy and bumby in places. The owner let me spray his bug spray on myself, but my husband didn't use and he was fine, tho this was in May. Bring a camera bc there is some cool natural art wrought by the hand of geological time.
So much fun! A must stop!
Note: this place is only dog friendly if your dog is a service animal. However, if the dog thing isn't an issue, this place is a short one mile hike of gorgeous rock and greenery. There is even an ice cave that gets cold enough to keep snow nearly year young.
Tried to Visit 4/21/17 but it was closed.
My family and I visited today and had a great time! A beautiful place to view the wonder of God's creation. Marvel at how the tress literally grow on the side of a rock. Definitely worth the trip! Bring a picnic lunch. The people were very nice and helpful!
It is a wonderful place. Went there yesterday with the family and everybody enjoyed it very much; even my 2-year old! Make sure to come a little earlier than closing time to give it as much attention as you can.
The people running the show were very nice and very friendly.
Would definitely recommend it to a friend! :)
This place is really awesome and fun to explore. The rock formations are amazing and lots of fun to climb on. Be sure to bring a camera because you'll want to take a lot of pictures.
