“Over two million works of art!”
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world’s largest and finest art museums. Its collections include more than two million works of art spanning five thousand years of world culture, from prehistory to the present and from every part of the globe. Founded in 1870, the Metropolitan Museum is located in New York City’s Central Park along Fifth Avenue. Nearly five million people visit each year. The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded on April 13, 1870, "to be located in the City of New York, for the purpose of establishing and maintaining in said city a Museum and library of art, of encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts, and the application of arts to manufacture and practical life, of advancing the general knowledge of kindred subjects, and, to that end, of furnishing popular instruction." This statement of purpose has guided the Museum for more than a century. The Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art have reaffirmed the statement of purpose and supplemented it with the following statement of mission: The mission of The Metropolitan Museum of Art is to collect, preserve, study, exhibit, and stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art that collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement at the highest level of quality, all in the service of the public and in accordance with the highest professional standards. The Met is the big daddy museum that all the other museums aspire to be. No matter what kind of art you're into, there's a huge section for it. My buddy and I went for five or six hours and we didn't even finish the Modern Art wing (but I did make him stop at every Lichtenstein, so there's that). NB for the impoverished traveler: It says it costs 20 bucks, but that's a suggested donation, so I want to say I gave them whatever change I had in my pocket.
GOSSIP GIRL STEPS
The Metropolitan Museum is also briefly shown in the prologue to the Woody Allen film "Manhattan", and the Whitney also has a brief appearance, since both are such classic, iconic NYC institutions.
The met is just amazing. Some of the most brilliant art I have ever seen and for the price of practically nothing. When I was there they had an amazing exhibit on the ancient pyramids and tombs and it was just incredible. You can spend hours in here, so definitely plan a day trip and experience these priceless works of art!
YES! These are the steps where Serena and Blair would sit in Gossip Girl! That is the only thing this place is famous for. I think the building is also some sort of art museum. Or something.
Always something interesting to see at the MET. They're constantly changing exhibits and some static ones. Every once in a while they do "free" days-- but, I don't know if it's worth it because the lines get so long. If you are into having the mental freedom/relaxation to explore, just pay the money and skip the lines.
Beautiful architecture, something there for everyone. Best part is it's donation based so you can pay whatever amount! Definitely a must when visiting New York!
Serena van der Woodsen has sat on these steps. That is all.
PS. Definitely plan at least half a day here because there's so much to see.
An absolute must see. Plan to spend easily half a day if your not an art lover, and a life time if you are.
