“in honor of a President”

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas about nature and conservation were dramatically shaped by experiences in the west. As a young boy growing up, TR's head was filled with romantic visions of the wild west where the huge herds of bison roamed the plains. When Theodore Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883, he was a skinny, young, spectacled dude from New York. He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation. The rugged landscape and strenuous life that TR experienced here would help shape a conservation policy that we still benefit from today. Explore the spectacular North Dakota badlands, watch abundant prairie wildlife, and experience a place that changed Theodore Roosevelt's life. "I do not believe that any man can adequately appreciate the world of to-day unless he has some knowledge of...[and] some feeling for...the history of the world of the past." Theodore Roosevelt

North Unit! North Unit! North Unit! What a beautiful place. The southern unit is nice but, that's where the tourists go. If you want no crowds, plenty of wildlife, and stunning landscape, head to the north unit. We planned to stay a night or two and wound up staying for 5. The generator noise stops at 8pm (yay!) and you are left to simply enjoy the night sky. Be prepared to be awoken by bison traveling through the campgrounds, they are everywhere. Of all the National Parks we've visited, this one ranks in the top 5.

Gorgeous national park! We saw lots of bison, prairie dogs, turkeys and even a coyote! We couldn't find a hotel nearby due to the oil drillers on our cross country trek, but had camping gear with us and decided to stay here in their campground on a whim. It was a fabulous decision! The bison heard walked through the campground as we were setting up and awoke us doing the same in the morning. Certainly a once in a lifetime sort of experience!

Stunning place. I'd say go to the north unit, but you'll be stuck in oil patch traffic getting there.

We took a family road trip to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Yellowstone, and the Grand Tetons, and TRNP was our favorite part of the whole trip. The hiking was wonderful and the views spectacular. We loved it! We saw prairie dogs and buffalo. There were a lot fewer tourists compared to the other parks we visited on our trip. It was a park we'd love to go back to someday.

$20 per car to get into the park Nice wildlife loop drive (~35 miles). Beautiful scenery...saw prairie dogs, bison, an antelope and a wild mustang. Worth the trip!

Our family of 6 stayed one night in the south loop site 31. Good pull through spot as our motor home pulled a short trailer. Room for both. Partially shaded site. Semi private no hook ups. Went on the wildlife loop saw buffalo, prairie dogs and wild horses. Went on the ridge line trail was a good shorter hike with the kids. Lots of height climb in the beginning but then it levels off. Saw a band of wild horses on the trail.
Would definitely go back.

Great park with big drive through, awesome views, and LOTS of wildlife. We saw more wildlife and got much closer to any wildlife here than in Yellowstone. A whole herd walked right past the car. Also less traffic and easier to get through, though parts of the road and park are closed.

We stayed in the south unit and absolutely love it! We came the first week of fall and although some paths were closed for the season we felt like we had the park to ourselves. Bison come up to the camp site- saw wild horses and prairie dogs on our walks.
Generators off 8-8 makes for a very quiet stay. I’d pick an outside site on the cottonwood loop for the best views. We stayed on the inside loop and it was good but would have preferred the outside. 2 days was maybe too short but had to keep going on our trip.

We stopped in this park on our way to Glacier NP. We absorbed the essence of the badlands from the Painted Canyon rest stop just before entering the park. The view is breathtaking! I am so glad we stopped. However, I think that horseback travel into the park is a big draw, and we don’t do that activity.
