“One of the Scariest Places on Earth!”
Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky has already begun to take reservations for tours this year. Originally built to care for patients suffering from tuberculosis, the sanatorium is considered one of the world's most haunted places. "Spreading the diseases through love" When the Sanatorium opened it was so large it had its own zip code. Tuberculosis was an extremely scary and very contagious disease at the time. Ironically, sanatoriums like Waverly helped spread TB, by allowing patients visitation from friends and family, before they knew TB was an airborne disease. "Experimental treatments" There were many attempts to treat tuberculosis, and quite a few were brutal and extremely painful. The experimental treatments that occurred at Wavery Hills "left the patient with horrific scars and often times, disfigurement." Fun fact: Waverly Hills Sanatorium is now working hard to recreate itself into a luxury hotel. The plans are supposed to go into effect in about a year, so if you want to see it in its current creepy state, you better hurry!
Did the 6 hour paranormal tour. I was pretty excited, but my niece had enough after 2 hours. We ended up leaving 1 hour early with some others. We got almost an hour for each floor, the first two has some remodeling and haunted house paint up so it wasn't as creepy as the other floors. I had a good time and wished I could have stayed the whole time. Some of the other guest brought some paranormal equipment, and that was pretty cool too. Fun times.
There's no way to see the building without entering the property through the main gate, in which yes you must have a scheduled tour. This place will send chills down your spine!
If you're a big history dork and a lover of all things paranormal Waverly Hills is pretty much on the list of top 10 iconic places. Unfortunately they've got some serious security who aren't fans of people trespassing, even during the day. There are however loads of ghost hunting tours all over the country who do overnight investigations of the Hills. Haunted Hamilton hosts one of the best overnight ghost hunts/tours you can take!
They are serious about the security. I stopped outside the gate to take some pictures and was told over the PA system more than once not to go past the gate.. they are serious and not very friendly. It still was pretty cool though, I'd like to go back and do a tour sometime.
Waverly Hills should remain as a museum. Additionally it would be nice if we could carry out archeological sites on the grounds of the compound. After all the main building was not the only one. There was also a whole African American wing.
Want to let everyone know that this is gonna be a wasted trip for anyone to go visit! there was about 10 that went on Oct 25 2014 We went in the mini tour at about 12:30 am. there was 23 in the tour, the floors we got to go on was the 2nd 3rd and 5th floor, all the floors are being remolded, the smell of dry wall was in the air, there was nothing scarey about any on this tour, there was no feeling of any kind of anything that would scare you, the guide told the crowd about what went on, and what took place at the Sanatorium years ago!! it was a 30 minute tour for 20.00 I wish I had went to Mcdonalds and eat my 20.00 bucks up! if any one got any thrills and chills out of this, everyone was silent, and there was nothing, but tore out walls, dust, drywall, forklifts, broken out windows!! that is how they are remodeling this place with all the fools money that go there!!! I say yes when this place first went out it would have been a place to go see, but it is private owned and the new owners are going to get it remodeled the easy way!! "WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY"
