“a mammoth watering hole treasure”
The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota, is the world’s largest mammoth research facility. You can tour an active paleontological dig site and view Ice Age fossils exhibited as they are found. Open year round, the Mammoth Site offers the museum visitor a 30-minute guided tour plus a 10-minute video. Tour information features the Mammoth Site and Ice Age geology, paleontology, and paleoecology. Today, visitors to the museum observe first-hand a scientific excavation. During the month of July, Earthwatch volunteers, under the direction of Dr. Larry Agenbroad, excavate, identify and study the Ice Age fossils.
Pretty low-key tourist site $10 per adult admission (6/2014) for the tour. You can also learn how to use an atlatl. The coolest thing is that the Mammoth bones are all in situ.
This was the highlight of our trip for the kids. Ben was our guide, teaching our kids how to dig up bones. Then we entered the massive live dig site. It was amazing! Over 60 mammoth fossils! You won’t be disappointed visiting this archeological dig site which is actively in use.
Check their hours before you plan to visit: it literally changes month to month almost. Some days they're open until 9pm, other days they close at 3:30.
Had an enjoyable time here. The tour guides are knowledgable and thorough. Seeing the bones in situ is a stirring sight. Reasonably priced and enjoyable for both adults and children.
Fun educational stop that is just long enough.
One of the highlights of our trip! What's with the 3 star ratings?? This place was amazing! $12 a person (09/2019) and sooooo worth it! We went on a guided tour which was unexpected but so helpful! They start you in a small movie theater room for a 10 minute clip on the history and then take you into the dig site. An active dig site I might add! You walk around the site learning tons and visually seeing history stuck in the ground. After the guided tour, you are free to roam around and take your time looking and taking pictures. There is even a elevator to the basement where you can see them at work and nice sized gift shop that I wanted to spend too much money at! Lol Five freaking stars all the way!
Nice little center with interesting fossils and artifacts. Kid liked it but wasn’t as interesting as we expected. Still worth a stop on the way to Rushmore.
The guided tour was pretty low energy and included unnecessary headsets which made conversation difficult. They rush you thru pretty quickly and don’t really allow time to tour on your own.
The fossils are amazing!!! I wish we could have gotten closer. Not a place to take kids under 5 though...ours were bored.
