“Meet Me At La King's”
In 1927, Jimmy King began making candy in Houston while learning the trade from 'Old World' candy makers. In 1976, Jimmy's oldest son, Jack, moved his family to the historic Strand, in Galveston, to recreate an old fashioned confectionery. He used the 19th century formulas and methods, handed down to him, using traditional equipment and procedures to make confections. La King's features a working 1920's soda fountain serving malts, shakes, ice cream sodas, sundaes, splits, floats and your favorite fountain treats. We proudly make and serve "Purity" ice cream which is Texas' first ice cream manufacturer, founded in 1889 on Galveston Island.
A favorite for our family. Always busy....for a reason!
Boyfriends dad told us we had to stop here and have a chocolate malt so naturally we did that. It was by far the best malt ever! Also the taffy is the best we have had as well. I recommend stopping at this old fashioned style candy store. We found it to be reasonably priced.
Great old-timey candy store. Local place, not a chain. Huge selection of chocolates and candies and also sell ice cream. They even have the penny press machines for those collecting. Fun for the whole family!
Famed for their saltwater taffy, which you can watch them pull, and for their old-school atmosphere. Sit down for a bit, order a malt or sundae, and soak it all in!
