“the museum of the "Mother Road"”
"Located on Route 66 in Elk City, this museum encompasses all eight states through which the "Mother Road" traveled. Numerous artifacts and antique cars along with rare historical documents and collections recapture the spirit of "The Road." Part of the Old Town Museum Complex which includes four museums on the property: National Route 66 Museum, Transportation Museum, Old Town Museum and Farm & Ranch Museum. Black Smith Shop opening soon. The park is open Memorial Day through Labor Day."
Although the museum was neat, the racist African American woman who manages it taints the experience with rudeness. I overheard that she said she would never get fired no matter how she treats people because she is a black woman, and if she was fired, she would call the NAACP. I plan to call the city (who owns the museum) to complain about the way she treats guests and her attitude. All the other employees were welcoming and informative. It's worth a stop! But if you experience the same rudeness from the manager I encourage you to also call the city to complain.
Make sure you arrive by 4 pm if you want to actually tour the museum or they will not let you in. We arrived at 430 and the ladies working very rudely informed us and others just arriving that we couldn't tour the museum because they closed at 5. We still walked around and checked out all the replica buildings from the outside, the gift shop and took a picture with the huge Route 66 sign. It's great for a photo stop but I think the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum was a much better stop. The people are friendlier there and they have a much better gift shop. So basically Id make a stop here for a photo, nothing else.
Meh. Take a selfie in front of the sign and move on. The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum is more fun.
This was a fun stop. Well worth the price of admission.
Meh. The 15 minute movie was informative.
Definitely is NOT open on Sundays, as we found out!
Have to pay to get in the museum but the sign out front is worth a "selfie stop" as it is really really big!
A bit underwhelming. they close at 5 (which I should have researched), so they rushed me through. They actually ended up closing at 4:50 as I was told to buy souvenirs first because the gift shop would be closed before 5. There are clean bathrooms and water fountains, so not a bad stop if you need a break. Since they were closing, my entry only cost $3 (the bathrooms and such are free).
Lovely Museum and replica neighbourhood. Very informative videos! We really enjoyed the old gas station soda jerk cafe. Found the staff friendly and helpful.
A nice little museum about route 66 and a good way to kill an hour or 2.
