Overview

Pismo Beach (population 8,000) is in San Luis Obispo County in the Central Coast region of California. It is part of the Five Cities Metropolitan Area which also includes Shell Beach (within the northern part of the Pismo Beach city limits), and Grover Beach, Oceano and Arroyo Grande, all to the south and south-east of Pismo Beach.

  2. The City is part of the original 8,838-acre Rancho Pismo. Rancho Pismo was granted to Jose Ortega by Manuel Rinemo Goriod on November 18, 1840.
  3. The name Pismo comes from the Chumash language word for tar, Pismu', which was gathered from tar springs in Price Canyon near Pismo Beach.
  4. Pismo Beach adopted the name "Clam Capital of the World" in the 1950s, though this motto is no longer used.
